The Idler

After 4 years out of the Central Books portfolio The Idler is back!

The Idler is a literary and philosophical magazine founded in 1993 by Tom Hodgkinson. It campaigns for more fun and more freedom in a world of consumer overload.

With issue 42 The Idler takes the periodical in a new direction. It will reinvigorate the form of the essay, and rediscover good old righteous fury. With twenty essays and conversations by today’s leading radicals and free spirits on the theme of Smash The System. How can we remove the trappings of an out-dated capitalist economy based on debt and greed, and create for ourselves a new life filled with music, poetry, nature, reflection and merriment? Like Wyndham Lewis’s BLAST!, The Idler wants to blow away the cobwebs and find new ways of living.

Contributors will include Oliver James, Alain de Botton, Paul Kingsnorth, Jay Griffiths Andrew Simms, David Boyle, Penny Rimbaud, John Mitchinson and Clare Pollard.

The Idler 42: Smash the System will be presented in a fine press limited edition hardback, cloth bound and typeset by Christian Brett.

Recent issues have been selling over 3,000 copies in bookshops.
